Day 3 at the IAAPA Show in Orlando, Florida

Today we wrapped up our third day at the IAAPA show in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention center.  We saw a number of unique vendors from a company who makes some very amazing animatronics - would you like a talking parrot for your pirate ship?  Well there was even a vendor who could supply the pirate ship if you didn't have that.

Looking for bouncy rides or castles there is even that at IAAPA.

And anything else your mind could conceive to bring to a theme or amusement park it was there, including this interesting climbing challenge which put tradeshow goers to the test.

This week at IAAPA

Just getting ready today to do the second day of IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) 2011 Show at the Orange Country Convention Center in Orlando Florida.  This was my first time to the show and all I can say is that it was amazing.  The show features products and services which could be used in the setup and operation of an amusement or event park.  Overall it seems less like a trade show and more like one giant Carnival, as the atmosphere on the trade show floor is just electric.  From coasters, water slides, management systems, ferris wheels, robotic creations, etc. it is all there.

Orange County Convention Center, this years home to the IAAPA 2011 Show
Outdoor exhibit area at IAAPA

I will post more details this week as well as some photos from the show of what can be seen and had at this years show.

Warrior Dash Ontario 2011 - Awesome!

I signed up for the Warrior Dash about 3 months ago...Heard about it from my brother, and I'm soooo glad that I did.  It was awesome.
I can honestly say, that I've never been so dirty in my life lol...I was covered in mud,as were thousands of others.  Yep....THOUSANDS!!  9,823 to be exact.

The course was tough - lots of hills (many more than I'd anticipated lol).  There were a number of obstacles as well...I had a blast.  Afterwards, a huge party with turkey legs and beer.  What more can you ask for.

I'm going next year for sure!

Anyway, see for yourself.  Check out this video from Immunotec.  They sposored the event with their Emotion Energy shot.

See you there next year!!!!

Thinking of retirement?

The other day my best friend Marnie, who is in the insurance industry was telling me about some of the people she has met and how with only a few years left before retirement they are now scrambling to get something put away.  It definitely made me think about my own retirement strategy, when your under 40 (no poke intended as I will get there soon enough myself) you tend to put it off as there is always lots more time to do that stuff.  So I can definitely see how financial planning for retirement can sneak up on you and before you know it you only have a few years left.  Looking around also there is a large percentage of people in that category approaching retirement.  Curiosity got the better of me actually so I did a google search on the number and came up with a Stats Canada figure from 2010 that 12.5% of the population is nearing retirement age within the next 10 years.  http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/demo10a-eng.htm Wow that is actually quite staggering when you think about it.

What I found more amazing though is how many Canadians in that age bracket have fallen for the RRSP  myth that so long as they have put as much into RRSP's as they can everything will be rosy come retirement and they can live this life of leisure.  Wow are they in for a shocker, just take a trip into Walmart or Home Depot now days and there is a grey wave of retirees working at these stores, and I don't think it is because they wanted to see how retail worked.  Turns out most of us just don't have the information we need to make the correct decisions to start effectively planning for our retirement, and that is where you need the benefit of knowing someone like Marnie to show you the options that are out there before it's too late.

I know this is a shameless plug for my friend but I send all of my friends and contacts to see her because I can be assured that they will be given the information they need rather than the information that leads to the largest commission.  Being it is last minute also I want to mention also that Marnie has a free information session planned for tomorrow 23 June in Barrie at the public library, so if you can spare some time it would be in your best interest to attend.  To get more information you can contact Marnie direct at (705) 220-0143.

Here is the information also on her presentation at the Library if your interested in attending.

Toronto Entrepreneurs Conference was Awesome!!!

Robert Herjavec
Well it has been a few weeks since our last post, but by no means boring.  We recently attended the Toronto Entrepreneurs show May 7th at the International Centre where we got to listen to a number of amazing speakers.  The highlight of the show though was the key note speaker Robert Herjavec of "The Dragons Den" who had the audience captivated with his life story of how he started out as a small business owner and went onto be head of The Herjavec Group.  One of the things that stuck with me the most though after hearing Robert speak though was how he and his staff deal with customers.  He showed a picture of his business card during the presentation and one of the interesting things was no where on the card was there a title; not president, owner or anything for that matter.  He then explained how it is his companies view that no matter what your position in the company it is every ones responsibility to look after the client, so titles are really irrelevant as far as he was concerned.  This struck a note with me I guess because when dealing with many large corporations everyone is so fast to pass the buck, ie. "I am the president so you wouldn't expect me to get my hands dirty" kind of attitude is so prevalent.  Overall though it was a great presentation, so if you ever get the chance to hear Robert speak make sure you take advantage of it.  There is always the next Toronto Entrepreneurs show next year.

The show also featured the first release of the Toronto Entrepreneurs Magazine, this is a very well written publication which I look forward to reading future issues.  To read the first issue online you can visit http://www.torontoentrepreneurs.ca/

Well that's all for today but much more to come soon.

50th Anniversary of first manned space flight

If your not a history junkie like myself; or have not been on google yet today you might not realize that today is the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight in Vostok 1.  It is amazing looking at the technological advances that have occurred since then in such a short period of time from manned space flight to the internet on cell phones that fit in your pocket.  For the Anniversary Christopher Riley produced a new documentary which was released today on YouTube to showcase this amazing achievement.  Here is a sample of the trailer followed by the movie for those who have some time to watch.

The true impact of corporate tax increases

I have been following the current election campaigns with interest as I am sure most business people have been.  Of particular interest is the Liberal governments desire to increase corporate tax rates because "Big Business" is the only one benefiting.  This is a huge lie which many Canadians unfortunately believe as well as some media simply because they are not informed.  Corporate income tax increases in fact do not discriminate between small and big businesses in fact they hit small business just as hard or harder if you take into account that most of these companies have 5 or fewer employees.  This is because unlike Personal Income tax the rate is not scaled according to the level of income, it is across the board at one rate.  Then taking into account that most businesses in Canada are small companies and dividends paid out to the owners are taxed at the personal income tax rates some of this money is in fact sometimes taxed TWICE.  I think most Canadian TAX Payers would shudder at the thought of this but it is true.

A look at just Ontario shows us that in 2004 97% of all Ontario Businesses were made up of either small or mid sized enterprises.  Courtesy of Statistics Canada and the CFIB - Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Please don't take my opinion as the basis for why an increase in corporate income tax levels is the wrong move by the Liberals.  The C.D. Howe Institute recently published an article stating that Governments would be far better to cut spending than to increase Corporate taxes.

"TORONTO—Governments would be better off cutting back on spending than increasing taxes, according to a new report from C.D. Howe Institute.
The report compared the impact of higher tax rates on provinces’ corporate income tax, personal income tax and sales tax bases.
Although personal income tax increases also carried a high cost, it was corporate tax hikes that really wound up costing governments, the report found.
It measured the marginal cost of public funds—the loss to society caused by raising an additional dollar of tax revenue.
In Ontario, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and P.E.I., reducing corporate taxes would bring gains over time, so that the offsetting provincial sales tax increase wouldn’t even be needed. Other provinces would be left revenue neutral.
“Instead of corporate or personal income tax increases, governments should use expenditure restraint to rebalance their budgets,” says Alexandre Laurin, C.D. Howe associate director of research.
“The most costly increase is corporate tax because it’s easier for businesses to adjust with measures like not investing and shifting capital to new jurisdictions —affecting the whole economy,” Laurin says.
The C.D. Howe report is just one of several in recent weeks to analyze the impact of cutting corporate tax rates.
In February, the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy published a paper arguing corporate tax cuts have helped make Canada the most tax-competitive country of all G7 nations.
Another report in January, from Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), calculated that federal and provincial cuts would bring a net gain of 98,800 jobs to Canada’s economy.
The federal government plans to cut Canada’s corporate tax rate from 18 per cent to 16.5 per cent with a further reduction to 15 per cent planned for next year.
Opposition parties could decide to challenge that decision in the upcoming budget."

So if you own or work for a small business remember to take this into account before you cast your ballot in this Springs Election.  And please get out and vote, it is your right as a tax payer to have your say at the polls.

Retiring or getting Laid off? What will happen to your benefits?

Chances are....you will loose your benefits. However, you have a 60 day window in which to convert your existing benefits plan to an individually owned plan without having to do a medical!
This is very appealing to anyone who would not normally qualify for benefits on their own.
If you're a retiree, this is bonus because under the government plan (which you qualify for once you are over 65), there is currently no vision, no dental, or catastrophic event coverage....There is also a $100 deductable and a 6.11 dispensing fee. Therefore you can have an individual plan to cover what's not included or top up your government plan for greater coverage.

Please contact me for more information. I can give you details and direct you to what your options are: Marnie MacKay 705-220-0143 - CALL ME!

Opening the debate about which is Greener Desktop vs Laptop

I bet you thought this was one of those political debate posts about election 2011 didn't you?  Despite how much I would love to comment on that I will refrain at the moment.  Today, as the resident techno expert, I want to follow up to the article posted earlier on making your home office greener (see article).  There has been quite a bit in the news lately comparing desktops to laptops and the energy they use.  To make a fair comparison, I think it is important to consider a few facts:

Desktops are no longer the power hungry beasts they were 5 years ago.  The new i3, i5, & i7 Intel Processors desktops now use much less electrical power than their predecessors while delivering far more computing power.  These same chips also power many laptop computers.  Since the advent of LCD displays the power usage of desktop computers has significantly decreased - just a note:  After looking at many of the ECO comparisons, they compare desktops with CRT (tube monitor) displays against current laptops.  This just isn't a fair comparison since CRT monitors haven't been sold for over 4 years.  The biggest fault, I find, in many of the comparisons is that they do not take into account the environmental impact in the manufacturing and disposal of both units.  Desktops have a significant advantage being that they are upgradeable which allows the user to extend the life of their computer several years.  In comparison, laptops do not have many parts which can be upgraded other than the memory and hard drive making their overall lifespan no more than 2-3 years.  In the event of a component failure this lifespan is significantly reduced further for laptops.  If you take this into account a far greater amount of energy and resources goes into producing and disposing of 2 laptops in comparison to 1 desktop.

In short, my recommendation is that if your computer is going to be a permanent fixture in your office and not going mobile a desktop may be your best option for you and the environment.  Don't get me wrong laptops are great and I use one myself extensively while on the road but they do have their place in the workplace.  So make sure to do your research before making your next purchase for the office.

Tax Season Brings out the ID Thieves

Identity theft is on the rise during tax time so you have to protect yourself even more during this period. From theft of mail to on-line phishing expeditions, the fraudsters are trying whatever it takes to get your identity so they can ring up credit cards, loans and even go as far as placing a fraudulent mortgage on your home. What would you do if that happened to you? You have to protect your good name and credit rating. For more information on best practices please read on: http://money.canoe.ca/money/mymoney/canada/archives/2011/03/20110310-144442.html For more information on Identity Theft Protection contact Marnie MacKay 705-220-0143 This information was obtained from http://money.canoe.ca/money/mymoney/canada/archives/2011/03/20110310-144442.html

Creating a Green Friendly Home Office

Creating a Green Friendly Home Office

“Whether you’re setting up a home office or are already a work-from-home veteran, there are ways to conserve energy,” says Chris Winter, Executive Director of the Conversation Council of Ontario. “And with a home office, you have lots of options for reducing your environmental footprint.”
Here are his top ways to ensure that your home office is earth-friendly.

Setting up your home office

If you’re in the process of setting up a home office, consider options that will make it more energy-efficient.
  • Go for natural light. “If you have the luxury of choosing a room, pick one with as much natural light as possible,” advises Mr. Winter. “You’ll save on electricity and have a better work environment. And who doesn’t want an office with a view?”
  • Buy second hand. Rather than buy new furniture, take a peek at your local second-hand store for a desk, filing cabinet, bookcases and other storage solutions. “This is a good way to save money, add some character to your home office and reuse or repurpose something of value,” he says.
  • Look for new products that are green. “Whether you’re in the market for new computer equipment or furniture, buy from companies that have eco-friendly policies in place; for example, those that use recycled or sustainable material, follow green manufacturing guidelines, reduce packaging or support green initiatives. In addition, many companies will now take your old computer to be recycled and disposed of responsibly,” says Mr. Winter. “You can normally find this information on the company website.”
  • Think laptop rather than desktop. If you’re buying new or upgrading your computer, in general, laptops are more energy-efficient than desktops.
  • Paint it “green.” A common way to spruce up an unused room is to freshen it up with paint. Now readily available in different colours and finishes, opt for low- or no-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint and primer for better indoor air quality.

The little stuff: Office supplies

It’s not just what you buy, but where you buy it.
  • Be a green consumer. Either online or in-person, favour retailers that offer green products and services, such as green seminars and ink and toner cartridge recycling.
  • Don’t buy disposable. However, if you must buy disposable items, make sure they’re at least recyclable and won’t end up in landfills.
  • Look for green office supplies. “There is no doubt that you’ll need paper, but there’s a good variety of innovative office products available,” says Mr. Winter. “From biodegradable ballpoint pens to fasteners that crimp paper and instead of using a stapler, always look for a green alternative.”

On-the-job eco-wise tips

There are plenty of ways to save energy by making small changes to your routine:
  • Scale back your paper use. “Promise yourself to not print anything — no emails or documents — unless you absolutely have to,” Mr. Winter says. Try setting yourself a no-paper goal for a week and see how easy it is to bypass the print option.
  • Use your power bar. Like any appliance in your home, even when your computer and printer are switched off, they can still draw power because they’re plugged in. This is known as ‘phantom load.’ “To reduce a phantom load, switch your power bar off along with your computer, peripherals and any other home-office equipment that’s plugged into an outlet,” he says.
Expert tip: Ensure your power bars are within easy reach so it’s easy to flick them off at the end of the day.
  • Know your recycling options. If you live in an area with a recycling program, know how to make full use of it. Stay up-to-date on what material your municipality or town recycles and the process you need to follow.

Great Article on the value of Word of Mouth Marketing

http://www.mckinseyquarterly.com/A_new_way_to_measure_word-of-mouth_marketing_2567

The Value of Stats to your Business

Doing business today has changed drastically in the past 10 years as the use of the Internet has changed how we do advertising.  With traditional media it was very difficult to tell when something was working except for direct sales coming through the door.  If a customer happened to share where they had found your business this was the only feedback you would receive.  Today though with the wealth of analytics software available you can directly track the effectiveness of your message online for very little investment.

This is how it works:

A Small piece of html code is inserted into each of your web pages to assist google in tracking visitors to your site.  This will provide very valuable information about your advertising campaigns, telling you where your visitors are coming from, time spent on each page, products they looked at, and even demographic information on your visitors.

The next step for you is to then make sure you incorporate your website address with all of your advertising.

As an example:
The importance of this is say you rent a billboard in Oshawa to promote your company and another one in London, you will be able to see how effective your billboard campaign is by the number of views by region.  This can save any business thousands of dollars in wasted advertising by allowing you to see how effective your billboard campaign is by region by the number of views to your site.  As the one in Oshawa may give you a return of 10,000 views per month and the London board may only return 250 views in the same month.  You obviously will not re-invest in the London board further or look at changing your message for that location.

For additional information on how to reap the benefits of web analytics for your business feel free to contact us for a no obligation consultation.
